In Memoriam

In Memory of Max Harris 1912 - 2008

Sheila Harris of Des Lacs has forwarded a financial donation to the Ward County Historical Society, as a memorial for Max Harris, from Jean Krumwiede. Max Harris and his wife Gladys were caretakers at the Society during the seventies. Max enjoyed restoring Model-T automobiles, (shown above) many times from the ground up. He also enjoyed working with antique clocks and player pianos. Max was an avid supporter of the Ward County Historical Society and will be missed by all who knew him.

Third Annual Open House and Tea

The tea was 'lightly' attended, but everyone had a great time despite the winter storm. Thank you to the RSVP volunteers Wayne and Ted, and thank you to Hanna Pederson and Mary Carlson, who did a wonderful job decorating and helping out. The board members all pitched in and we all had a great time. Donations are still coming in and we are always grateful for the support. Thank you to Ardis M. Markle for your contribution to our 'Wall Paper Fund' for the Samuelson House Museum, it is very much appreciated! A special thank you for their continuing support (and a very generous donation for the Society) goes to Shanon and Elaine Polsfut of AAA Heating & Sheetmetal.

The Ward County Historical Society is pleased to announce its fourth Annual Holiday Tea & Open House for the people of Ward County. (Time and Date to be announced.) Admission is free for this event; however we will ask for a free-will donation from our guests. Coffee, Tea, Punch, with cookies, "bars" and fudge will be served. The Bagel Stop Scones made by Bagel Stop's Marchelle, that are so popular every year, will again be served for your enjoyment!

See you there!

About the Ward County Historical Society

The Pioneer Village of the Ward County Historical Society is located on the North Dakota State Fairgrounds, in Minot, ND. In addition to the Pioneer Village there is a museum with antique cars, horse-drawn buggies and sleds, and various printing presses from different eras. The Museum also features an Iron Lung, dental equipment, and farming implements. Seveal early pianos brought into Minot during the late 1800s are also available for viewing.

The Ward County Historical Society Samuelson Museum House is open for tours by appointment. The Ward County Historical Society Archive and Research Center, located in the old Harmon House, is available by appointment for researchers pending the availability of volunteers who are also doing projects for the society. The Ward County Historical Society Pioneer Village has two school houses from McHenry County, and is home to the original Immanuel Lutheran Church. Ward County Historical Society recently had Eagle Boy Scout aspirees chink and renovate the original Sundre Log Cabin as part of their Eagle Scout program. The original South Prairie Cook Car (donated by Lorraine Smith of South Prairie), and the blacksmith shop were also attended to by the Minot Area Boy Scouts. The Pioneer Village is also home to the original (Imperial) Ward County Court House, which has served many colorful and various functions over the years. A General Store and Barbershop round out our Pioneer Village displays at the Ward County Historical Society.

Our main display in the Samueleson Museum House honors the Second World War Veterans of North Dakota, many of the veterans in the display are from Ward County. There is a 1,600+ photo collection display of the veterans taken at Brady's Bar & Balcony Lounge, in downtown Minot during the Second World War.

Gov. Hoeven & Wife Visit Ward County Historical Society
during the 2008 North Dakota Annual State Fair in Minot
North Dakota Governor John Hoeven

The Ward County Historical Society is open, busy and having a good time during the North Dakota 2008 State Fair. Some of the noteworthy news is that Governor Hoeven and his wife Mikey attended the Governor's Picnic held at the Ward County Historical Society Historic Village. The Governor and his wife both contributed donations to the society for our work at the society. We appreciate their visit and contributions to the Ward County Historical Society.

ND State Fair Sunday Church Service
s and his wife Linda

Sunday the Reverend J. David Jones (to see pictures click here) conducted a pioneer church service on the topic of the nineteenth century circuit riders. His wife Linda provided the music for the service. After the church service the society served refreshments for our guests.

2007 Annual Meeting Results

The annual Ward County Historical Society meeting was held Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Minot Public Library meeting room. Due to the resignation of Christina (Campbell) Sunwall, the Rev. J. David Jones was appointed (there being no other nominees) to fulfill her position. The following constitutional changes were voted and passed:

1.The proposal to temporarily defer the current rotation of terms in accordance with the Constitution to allow internal staggering of three board member terms to put them inline with future elections and the constitution. Passed.

2. The proposal to change the constitutional requirement to hold the Annual Meeting in September with a new Annual Meeting date in January as of January 2009. Passed.

3. The proposal to change the Constitutional Bylaws to reflect modern automated banking practices, moneys are to be paid out by numbered checks signed by only one Board Officer. That is to say that only one signature (per modern check processing) by a Board Officer is required. This proposal was amended to have the requirement to have the check authorized by a second board member for accountability purposes. Passed.

We were honored by the presence of general members Joe Novak and Doug Wurtz at the annual meeting. They met after the meeting with the society's historian, Paul Robinette to view the latest additions to the Brady Bar WWII Photo Collection at the Samuelson House.

In Memoriam:

Leslie and John Coughlin have generously donated $100.00 to the Ward County Historical Society in memory of Bruce Van Sickle. The memorial is very much appreciated by WCHS and we thank you for your support.
